Research 101

After the group activities (Cadet Leader You Have a Dilemma and Edward Snowden: Hero or Traitor) where as small groups you were tasked with conduct hasty research from a variety of sources to solve a situation or make yourself more aware of a particular topic. We had a lecture ( Research 101 PowerPoint) in class on Tuesday that talked about research and how it is a critical skill in just about everything you do in life. FOR HOMEWORK, (due tomorrow Friday) I want you to watch the below video and make a summary comment in the blog comment section about WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED ABOUT RESEARCH SO FAR???

VIDEO TO BE WATCHED FOR HOMEWORK: Watch this video lecture overview about Research from a college professor in Montana. Still watch the video when he talks about using the library because even though some of his university's college systems are different, the PROCESS (using a search database or library catalog) and FUNCTIONS (how to use the data base or library catalog) are similar.

WHAT IS NEXT? On Monday, our class will receive a How to Use the BMHS Library for Your Research Class? Report to the library computer room on Monday.

  1. Somethings that i have learned about research are the funnel method. This allows me to start with main sources and narrowing it down to better sources. Another thing that i have learned is how to tell if a source is good or bad sources in general. One more thing that i learned about research is that i can use the CQ Researcher to research reports done on whatever the topic is and justr use that as a starting point.

  2. A few things i learned in this video was how to use the funnel method to rule out bad sources and select good sources by using it. Another thing that i have learned about research is that while wikipedia is not the most reliable site, it is a good starting point from your project but it should never be sighted for a project source. One last thing i learned is that using your local library or your librarys websites is a great way to get some sources and pretty much all of them will be reliable.

  3. While watching this video, i learn the difference between the good, somewhat good and the bad sources and how to tell them apart. Also, i learn about the funnel method and how to use it and start any research. It taught that wikipedia is not necessarly incorrect you just have to know what to look for to know that it is correct and that you can use it.

  4. What I've learned from watching this video is how to find good resources. Like, peer reviewed journals which are viewed by other scholars and books written by subject’s experts. Also how I would give the author the credibility if I use their work. Another thing I learned was how Wikipedia is a great starting point but a bad way to end my research and that I shouldn't site it. Wikipedia isn't a 100% reliable source. Finally, I learned how to install Google scholar and how to use it. I can just write a keyword or a title of an article and it should sent me to a link and connect me to butte college resources.

  5. From watching this video I have learned that resources are a big part of what research. This is because some resources can be bias toward the topic you are researching so you really want to focus on finding fact stated resources and not just click on the first links you see. I also learned that you really have to expand the amount of resources you have in order to make your research better. Wikipedia can also have false information so its not a good idea to include in your resources. I have also learned that there is another website called CQ researcher that can help you find resources. It may include different books and websites related to your topic.

  6. After watching this video i learned that wikipedia is only a good place to go to learn background information about a topic but should not really be sited. There are many different sources out there that all vary in credibility and you should always make sure it is a very credible source.

  7. What I learned about research so far is that there are many ways to research. Also how to find out if sources are reliable by using the funnel method. This might sound confusing but in order to research you have to research even more to find out what you researched. The reason for this is because while researching I realized that a question would pop up, which caused me to research again. Then another question popped up and the cycle continues. Also LtCol. Killacky taught me in order to get far and be good in life you have to know what you're talking about and in order for this to work you need to research. Researching can get you far in life. If you do it correctly!

I have learned a lot after watching this video and learning previous things about research in class. I have learned that research takes time because you have to know if your source is credible and decide whether it is reliable like a book or journal. I have also learned that the funnel method starts with the basic work and then narrowing it down to get more detail. Wikipedia is also not all a bad website, it can be used as a "starting" point to gain understanding. However, not for your actual research. The reference pages could also be helpful on sites like Wikipedia that leads you to credible sources.

  9. I've recently learned that research isn't easy. You have to make sure your sources are highly reliable. The facts on every website can possibly be an opinion.

  10. Even though much of that video only reinforced what I already knew, it still taught me to really be a little extra careful of the sources that I use and champion in a research paper. The reason being that I like biased sources of any side because they reveal more than the one side of an argument but also psychological traits of the side. This I find this to be a danger to me, however, this video, in a way, as a wake up call

  11. I learned that reaserch has to really preferably be about something you like. Most of the time research you are actually interested in turns out to be bad. I also learned about good sources and bad sources. But instead of learning it new I re enforced what I already knew which was how to tell between a good sources in the Internet and a bad one.

  12. after watching this video i learned that their are many bad websites that might have either false or not alot of information. Also, i learned that there are many ways to look for good resources for example downloading data bases from your computer. The last thing i learned was that you cant just get all your research from website, you have to really dig down deep and do even more research

  13. I've learned over the last few months that research is no simple task. Taking the first source that pops up from a Google search is generally not a good idea. Making sure sources are reliable is a key part of research. You can check for reliability by looking at a multitude of sources and see if they agree with each other. Like others said the funnel methods is helpful and using sites like Wikipedia are good ways to start the project but not end it. Talking to others and using resources other than the internet is also helpful.

  14. While doing my project I have learned a lot of valuable things about research. The first is there can be many articles that say different things so you should read many different articles then form your own opinion. The next thing I learned is that while Wikipedia is a good way to familierize your self with a subject it is not a good place to cite because people can edit Wikipedia themselves. I also learned that you don't need books or the internet To do research, you could simply ask some one with experience

  15. I've learned that research isn't a 123 task. It takes a lot of time and it isn't something you can just take the first thing you find. You need to keep looking and make sure its a good source not a bad one. Since you have to constantly do research it has to be on something you like and enjoy researching if not the task will just drag along and you will get nowhere. research is also not just through the computer it is also talking to people and seeing if what you have discovered has more than just one person/site proving that its correct.

  16. I've learned that research is not as easy as I first thought it was. Before, I would just take the first couple sources on google I found. I found that you need to look through several sources, not just the first couple you find. In this way you can confirm what all the sources have to say and give an educated answer.

  17. I learned that research is a process that takes more then one resource. For example If your doing research on the first moon landing you shouldn't use one website to get all of your information. Maybe your basic information you could use a website like wikipedia but if you want better information try using a book for more accurate info.

  18. Ive learned that in order to do daily activities you need to do research for as much as helping a friend. One method that I believe really shows me hoe to manage my time better and be better at researching is the funnel method and this is where I find a big ide and I bring that big idea into smaller more defined ideas that allow me to concentrate more on my big idea.
