What Leaders Have You Created...?
In our Navy JROTC program we talk about the concepts of both followership and leadership. The belief is you have to learn how to lead yourself before you can lead others. Every leader follows someone in their "chain of command". For example, the Senior Naval Science Instructor follows the guidance and direction of the Principal of our school and the Area Manager. The Principal of the school follows the guidance and directions of the Norwalk Public Schools Superintendent and the Area Manager follows the guidance and directions of the Commanding Officer of Naval Service Training Command.
Looking at Leadership from a different angle, in the graphic pictured above on this blog post it makes the statement True Leaders Don't Create Followers They Create More Leaders.
Your Homework Assignment: Based upon that statement, I want you to post an entry (blog comment) specifically stating what "Leader" have you contributed in creating or developing, use their first name only. Describe and explain your contribution to their leadership development. If you have not contributed towards developing any specific leaders in this unit, then I want you to explain in detail why you have not done this. This assignment is due to be completed by Wed (June 12) during your scheduled class period. Use your first name and class period to identify yourself.

I have helped Damian begin to become a leader. The first lesson I ever taught him was that it is never ok to break rules even if they are small ones. I know he won't break them again and will probably pass on the knowledge I gave him.
ReplyDeleteAnother time I helped Damian was showing him how to work even when there are distractions around him. He can now get work done if he needs to regardless of the environment.
A few months after I helped him I saw him one day and he was in charge of NS-1 drill. This is proof that Damian has leadership traits and that I helped instill them.
When you mentor someone and influence them to lead you need to sustain that effort from time to time. You try to catch them doing something right and reinforce that behaviour, and if you catch them slacking use it as a teaching moment. Talk to him about community support for BMHS Scholarship night and leadership...should prove to be an interesting conversation...
ReplyDeleteI have help odalis with any question she has i answered regarding anything in ROTC or in other subjects in school. Which is what I think a upperclassmen should do not intimate but be friendly and be able to make underclassmen feel comfortable to come up to them with not just ROTC concerns. I mean that what ROTC is another family where we help one another. I know she comfortable to speak to me about any situation she has that she needs guidance.
ReplyDeletei have not got the chance to mentor someone and influence someone yet because this is my first year in NJROTC. But i have been influence by my peer in my class by there leadership qualities and i am willing to make in improvements for next year to show others what they have taught me because many are leaving this year to college. so i feel that will be my piece to uphold.
ReplyDeleteI have assisted Dillon this year, not just in NJROTC but throughout anything he needed assistance in. I have seen him transform to and polite, intelligent, dedicated, and disciplined young NS-2. I feel as though he is ready and capable for a leadership role, as he has shown that he is able to handle it (supply, NS-1 Drill etc.). Also, I've showed him that it's not okay to the wrong thing when no one is looking. I remember the first company formation we had this year and he asked me this question that I remember quite thoroughly. Dillon: "What's so important about the leadership roles?" It's to keep order, discipline, and most importantly motivation within the cadets. I believe that we refrain from losing motivation mostly because of our senior cadets.
ReplyDeleteI have contributed in developing Lucas Elguera as a leader. In the short amount of time that he served as my sergeant I feel as though Lucas has become more trustworthy and more mature. He has many leader figures aside from mine including his own brother.
ReplyDeleteIn a small way I also feel as though I helped develope Mikey as a leader. Being in competition with him all time has led him to take ROTC even more serious than he planned. Over the years he has been in ROTC Mikey has changed alot and I'm glad to concider myself part of his transformation.
I haven't got the opportunity to assist, mentor, or influence someone yet in NJROTC because It's my first year in it. However i have been influenced by my friends and peers in ROTC by them setting the right examples for me and by showing me the ropes to things i didn't know about. So hopefully next year i am able to do the same thing and set the same example for the new first year cadets
ReplyDeleteMan!!! I haven't really um how should I put this, haven't really made somebody leader. In NJROTC I haven't really made any one a leader because I think I haven't gotten the chance to and that i have sports all year round.
ReplyDeletebut I am an excellent motivator. I do think that if i push myself harder i believe that i can accomplish that goal of making that person a leader.
So,what i want to do is try to be more committed to the unity and the same time be a good follower because like everyone says in-order to be a good leader you have to be a good follower.

ReplyDeleteWell Ive had many positions in Rotc starting from supply to becoming the CO. Ive learned many things and I know that Ive taught as well. The person I can honestly say ive mentored was Miss Hernandez in period 6. Ive shown her what a leader ive been not only by helping her though her problems but also sitting with her and helping her with her work.
As a leader I feel like you have to know every one well. Well enough to actually know when something is bothering them. I feel like they need to trust you a 100% to actually let you know what bothers them. Miss Hernandez was going through a lot of tough times and I let her know my tough times. I compared how I felt and where I stood and her and I got really close.
This may not seem a lot but it is. one your having a bad day and someone simply says what is wrong? are you ok? or even gives you a compliment it changes your mood right away.
I feel like ive been a great role model or even a great leader and I hope she feels the same way!
When it comes to mentoring and leading, I don't think I have lead someone in our NJROTC class but when it comes to school and other places then yes I have.. Me as a very motivated cadet I think I have had cadets follow me.
ReplyDeleteI have lead people by helping out with personal problems, helping them with physical and academically, and teach friends how to handles situation wiether its verbally, or physically.
I think I am a very great leader!!!!!!!!
To be honest I think in a way Ive made Tyron bullock a leader and Ive sort of helped him come out of his shell. When I first met ty ty he was a very shy individual that was very humble and down to earth. Ive helped him to be able to enjoy life have fun be, childish, but be able to turn it off and handle responsibilities tyron has helped me also he's a great friend and has helped me mature and showed me being humble is one of the best things to be in life.
ReplyDeleteThrough out my four years of ROTC, I have had many leadership positions. Even when I did not have some of those positions, i still felt like it was my job to continue leading others. That is something i realized. A true leader does not only lead because he is told or because it's his job. He leads because it makes him feel good that he is helping others become another great leader. It makes him feel good knowing that he is helping someone become more mature and more confident with themselves and when they lead. This is what I felt when helping kids younger than me become better leaders. An example is the color guard. I have always worked with the right and left rifles of the color guard and thought them what i know. And they have taken all that knowledge and leadership to help lead others by learning those positions as rifles and becoming good at them. There are a lot more examples in which I have done this and it has made feel like i have done great as a leader.
ReplyDeletei think i have influenced marcel to be a better learder i remember when he becam class leader and he told me that he wasnt that serious about class leader he said that if he was a platoon commander or seargent he would have taken it serious. i told him how wqould you be a commander of a whole platoon if you dont take leading a class serious.
ReplyDeleteI had never seen myself in a leadership position or even a staff position befor this year but now that I'm here I have had many power unities to create other leaders who will lead 100% better than me. Brendon is the kid who I feel like I have influenced the most. Due to the fact that I havnt only given him ROTC advice and mentoring but for other reasons. He has helped me alot through my term as a platoon commander. He has picked up the slack when ever I had asked and also showed tol the platoon community service events even if I was not there're. He has relived me of my position and will continue to hold 1st platoon to high standards

ReplyDeleteI don't believe that I've caused a certain person to be a leader because it was never my concern to direct any specific person. I would only hope that my contributions and my personality could rub off on those around me to be more positive, eccentric and at the same time deep and wholesome. I've made sure to remain non judgmental as a follower/leader and contribute while making things fun, but also show maturity in the right areas. Balance is key in being a leader, and you lead yourself every day in your actions. People are aware of what you do, whether you know it or not, and I always act accordingly to that.

ReplyDeleteI think through my four years in this unit I have been mentored by many as well as mentored a few cadets. I loved being the follower or some of our best Upper Classmen. I dont think I could've gotten anywhere without them. Since being an assistant in the staff as a freshman to the day I gave up my XO position I've tried to be the best leader I can be. I started helping out Restrepo and Hoque, later becoming in charge of a platoon as p
Imp Sophmore. This made me influence over 30 other high schoolers and help the most squares away platoon in that year's AMI. My Junior year I was in charge of a 5th period NS1 class, and got to work with cadets Arias, Leon, Walsh, and Huertas. All of these cadets have leadership positions now. I think being a good leader is about putting everyone else.before yourself, to pass on everything you know so your knowledge isn't wasted, to be a part of them not just and individual.

ReplyDeleteIn my previous 3 (going on 4) years in the unit, I have been influenced and mentored by many individuals, some being Folston, E and Hoque, and I try to pass what I've been taught down to new incoming cadets. I mostly try to influenced new cadets (NS1's) because they are the future of this unit. I personally believe that I have influenced many cadets in a positive way. One example, is Damian. I believe that I taught him how to be a better leader. Which is why I put him in a leadership position commanding the NS1 squad drill team. It helped him find the leader that he is and come out of his shell.

ReplyDeleteI believe I as a leader have contributed to influencing someone as a leader which is kevin. I have seen that there are times were things are slow with him and sometimes people need someone to push them on, motivate them as I feel motivated by leaders that I feel have showed me the way to becoming a leader. I feel I push him on as well as he pushes me on. Its a team thing that him and I have established but it wouldn't have started if I hadn't stepped in and established it in the first place. Since we've talked and realized what we have going on I know he will do the same with people he sees falling behind and establish a team with people he knows like I have because it works.
I believe as a platoon Sargent and commander it's my goal to influence my cadets that form part of my platoon. I want to better through out the program. There are many cadets I've talked to and tired to influence, the ones that have stand out to me the most are Natasha and Sergio.
ReplyDeleteNatasha I feel is a great leader In progress, she has a every important job in ROTC and she knows the responsibly that comes with it. I honestly feel she is kinda a mini me, she is following my steps that I had. I know she will do better though because I will be there to help. She knows that she can count on me with anything, ROTC, school or life wise. Sergio has grown as a leader thanks to me. He has shown that he's matured and knows how to act now. I believe in him as a leader. We have establish a relationship where if either one of us is out of line we will point it out. He's an outstanding Sargent and I trust him about being responsible when it comes to things about our platoon. I will lead a hand out to anyone who needs it.

ReplyDeleteI believe that I have not created a leader this year in the JROTC program. I think this is so because as a newly ranked Seaman apprentice, I was not given the opportunity and the privilege to help contribute to others and help make them a leader. Even though I have been to a few community service opportunities, I do not feel like I have made a great impact on others around me and in the unit. In the future, I might be able to help form and mold leaders in the unit by being a bit more active in events out side of the class and also by helping and talking to other cadets and trying to be a modeled example of a cadet for the upcoming freshmen.Although I am not an out spoken person and very social, next year I might be able to help others grow to not only be good followers but also excellent leaders.
I made Ramos a leader in great process because we have been through alot because when he had done a mistake i would help him out and find another way to find it. I reached him to become a good leader because its just been really hard for him to make smarter choices. So i always gave him good advice to become a good leader. Also Bayles, the reason i say him cause we shaped each other into becoming a great leader. We've been working with each other for two years and we had alot of ups and down and that what leaders face, and Bayles also told me that attitude reflects leadership, and that was a really good quote he told me.
